Daily Dose of Protest: Happy New Year (Prince Can’t Die Again) – Mac McCaughan

This little ditty was recorded towards the end of 2016 and the premise was fairly self-explanatory. Regardless of how bad things will get, on the bright side at least Prince won’t die again.

The Superchunk front-man expressed a pessimistic outlook for 2017: “Okay, but this could be a great year if you’re rich. Or if you’re a racist craving an authoritarian hand. And the sun will shine on you if you hate women. And then the sun itself will turn us all to sand”

McCaughan wasn’t far of with his assessment of 2017, but there were at least some positive developments. For example, with the #MeToo movement some of those who hated women were in for a reckoning. Also, racist woman-hater Roy Moore ended up losing in Alabama.  McCaughan still held out confidence that if you “play the long game, muster up some cheer” that Trump and his MAGA cohorts won’t prevail (“All that winning might end sooner than they think”). Regardless of what happens in 2018, at least Prince can’t die again.

The song also appeared on the Battle Hymn compilation, with the proceeds going to Planned Parenthood, ACLU and 350.org.
