Daily Dose of Protest: People’s Champ – Arkells

“People’s Champ” is the newest single from Canadian indie rock band the Arkells. The catchy tune and fun video could cause some to lose sight of the socially conscious lyrics which resonates in today’s political climate. The song is a plead for leaders who truly care about their citizens. The lyrics also take a number of shots at Donald Trump. One example is the following:

“Before you held a grudge
Or the highest office
You do nothing every year
But you’re showin’ up on the red carpet”

Leaders like Trump want the praise without putting in the work. Instead of caring for the people, they only care about the stroking of their egos.

The tune is also a battle cry to continue to rally against injustice. The lyric “we’re street fighting on the pavement” refers to the different marches and movements that are continuing to gain momentum.  The band also addressed similar subject matter with their 2017 single “Knocking At The Door” which was written in response to the 2017 Women’s March On Washington. Who says that the resistance can’t have a beat you can dance to.
