“London Is Burning” is the first single from Joe Strummer 001, a compilation of rarities and unreleased material which is due out September 28, 2018.

Of course, Strummer is most known for his work with The Clash. As one of the most influential  bands of all-time that was more than enough to ensure a lasting legacy. But his body of work outside of The Clash is worthy of consideration. This collection of rare gems which include his work with the 101ers, solo and with The Mescaleros will hopefully expose listeners to overlooked aspects of Strummer’s music career. Right up to his untimely passing on December 22, 2002, he remained a vital artist who made vast contributions to the cannon of protest music.

Like the bulk of Strummer’s composition, “London Is Burning” is socially aware. The tune was reworked as “Burnin Streets”, which appeared on his 2003 posthumous release with the Mescaleros, Streetcore. This version is more up-tempo than the slowed down Streetcore version.

The song’s lyrics about London’s political upheaval remain just as relevant in light of Brexit and other issues. Lyrics such as “Too many guns in this damn town /At the supermarket, you gotta duck down” also resonates with current gun violence issues in the USA and other localities throughout the world. If Strummer was alive today it would be interesting to think what Strummer would have to say about today’s political climate. No doubt he would be inspired to compose even more timeless socially conscious music.
