Daily Dose of Protest: Blood // Water – grandson

Grandson is the alias of American born, Canadian raised musician Jordan Benjamin. “Blood // Water” is the opening track off of his 2018 released, explosive politically charged 5 song debut EP a modern tragedy vol. 1.

In a press statement, grandson describes the EP as “my first cohesive body of work. It’s a sort of state of the union as told from a fed up, disenfranchised, pissed off young poet.” He goes on to add: “This is the only way I know how to release my anger and frustration with the pervasive recklessness and corruption that seeps into how we treat the environment, how we treat one another and how we treat ourselves.”

Potent lyrics of “Blood // Water” include “What you gon’ do / When there’s blood in the water / The price of your greed/ Is your son and your daughter,” “You poisoned me just for / Another dollar in your pocket” and “When the last tree’s fallen / The animal can’t hide / Money won’t solve it.”

The tune poignantly highlights the root of most evil. Once big money gets into politics the bottom line becomes more important than the good of humanity. Deforestation, poisoned drinking water and endangered species are all preventable consequences of greed.

The cost of shortsighted greed is that future generations suffer. Thankfully we have a new generation of disenfranchised and pissed off young poets speaking up.
