Jennifer Holub is a Canadian singer-songwriter who uses her music to explore important feminist themes. Her sophomore album The Reckoning is set to be released September 28, 2018. On her Bandcamp page the album is described as “a hawkish condemnation of society’s place for women, and an urgent call to rouse from it. “

“For me the reckoning means coming to terms with what’s happening and calling things out for what they are,” Holub said in a statement made to The Sudbury Star. She continues,  “Also, listening to other people calling things out for what they are. In particular, what’s happening to women and non-binary people in our society and what’s always been happening.”

Holub released her first single and video from the album, “Island.” She describes the motivation behind the powerful visuals contain in the video, “All those instances being brought to light in the media due to the #metoo movement, I felt that would be a compelling video to see, all put together, to really drive the point home: these are not isolated cases; these are not islands. This is what’s happening. This is what always has been happening.”

One of the poignant lyrics in the tune is “You only get to be shocked and appalled the first time .”

It is a sad reminder that instances of #MeToo are far more commonplace than some want to believe. Thankfully voices are becoming more amplified and the reckoning is starting to arrive.
