Grace Petrie is an UK folk singer-songwriter and activist who spent the past decade building a reputation for her socially conscious brand of DIY music. Her latest album, Queer as Folk is due out September 14, 2018.

She recently released the album’s first single and video, “Black Tie.” The tune is an anti-conformity anthem which Petrie describes as being about “shrugging off whatever expectations society has of you to wear or look or be anything at all.”

The empowering lyrics include “And the images that fucked ya were a patriarchal structure / And you never will surrender to a narrow view of gender” and “Trying to fight the spread of bigotry and fear.”

The lyrics also addresses how society tries to fit everyone in boxes that were “constructed to make it seem like people come in just two teams.”

Grace Petrie is part of a new generation of artists who are using their platform to breakdown the regressive patriarchal systems that continue to oppress.
