Daily Dose of Protest: You Hate The Title – Speedy Ortiz

“You Hate The Title” is off of Speedy Ortiz’s 2018 album Twerp Verse. The album’s Bandcamp page describes the tune as “a slinky traipse through the banality of this current moment in patriarchy – in which survivors are given the mic, but nitpicked over the timbre of their testimonies.”

This is highlighted with the lyric “You hate the title, but you’re digging the song. You like it in theory, but it’s rubbing you wrong.” Sometimes people claim to be allies of #MeToo and #TimesUp but belie their claims if supporting the survivors is inconvenient or makes them uncomfortable.

Front woman and lead guitarist Sadie Dupuis is also a strong advocate for making sure that concert venues are safe places. In connection with this, Speedy Ortiz recently covered Liz Phair’s “Blood Keeper.” The proceeds will go towards helping to distribute the pocket guide called “Making Spaces Safer,” created by War On Women’s Shawna Potter.

“Shawna and I have a shared interest in using our music to spread awareness, and to empower people to make their scenes more inclusive,” Dupuis says in a press statement. “So of course I was super excited when I got my copy of ‘Making Spaces Safer.’ If every venue’s staff had access to it, bands would have stronger allies in keeping their fans happy and safe.”
