Ongoing History of Protest Music Episode 22: Say Their Names (with David Rovics)

This episode features Portland-based singer-songwriter and activist David Rovics, who has already released four albums in 2020. We discuss what inspires him to be so prolific. We also discuss his most recent album, Say Their Names, the current situation in Portland, the important role music plays in protest movements, the challenges of being a DIY artist, among other topics.

The podcast features portions of the title track off his new album, “Don’t Pay The Rent” from another one of his 2020 albums, Notes From A Failed State, and “A Penny A Play” from yet another 2020 album Strangers & Friends. The podcast concludes with the opening track from Say Their Name, “Anarchist Jurisdiction” played in its entirety.

I also invite listeners to leave a voice message mentioning their favorite protest album, along with a brief statement of why they connect with the album. These comments will be included in a future episode. They will also be counted as votes for the 500 Protest Albums Project
