Reggae has long been an important contributor to the canon of protest music. Not only does it delve into Jamaica’s political climate, but Reggae from the UK and other locales also provides social commentary on global concerns. I compiled a Spotify playlist of 100 Reggae and reggae-adjacent (such as ska and dub) protest songs to spotlight this. For the sake of variety, I decided to limit it to one tune per artist (which is why your favorite Bob Marley song has been excluded). Also, my favorite Bob Marley song is “Redemption Song“, but because it is more acoustic folk than straight-up reggae, I chose a different selection. The songs are also presented in chronological order.
