Daily Dose of Protest: Gatekeeper – Jessie Reyez

Ever since women started to come out against Harvey Weinstein, the floodgates started to open up with multiple sexual predators finally being outed. Giants in every industry have fallen.  Also the hashtag #MeToo helped embolden victims to come forward.

“Gatekeeper” by the Colombian-Canadian Singer-songwriter perfectly encapsulates the  #MeToo movement. The song relates Reyez personal experience with a music producer. The producer is the “Gatekeeper” who promises stardom, but it comes with a cost (“How much would it take for you to spread those legs apart?”). The song can potentially be an uncomfortable listening experience, but that is the point. Lasting changes quite often starts with uncomfortable conversations.

“Gatekeeper” appears on Reyez 2017 EP Kiddo. I’m also posting Reyez short film which details the true life story behind the song.
