Daily Dose of Protest: Miniskirt – Braids

Time Magazine just named the Silence Breakers, connected with the #MeToo movement as their Person of the Year. Because of this, “Miniskirt” from the Canadian indie experimental pop band Braids was an appropriate selection.

In a 2016 Pitchfork interview, front woman Raphaelle Standell-Preston mentioned that the lyrics deal with her being molested by her stepfather.  It a real life inspiring story of surviving sexual abuse. It also focuses on the issue of victim blaming (“You feel you’ve the right to touch me / Cause I asked for it”). Standell-Preston makes it clear that what a person wears doesn’t give individuals a licence to sexually harass (It’s my little mini skirt / Think you can have it / My little mini skirt / It’s mine all mine). Despite positive developments, the song poignantly examines social issues that are still ongoing.

The song appears on Braids 2015 album, Deep In the Iris.
