At 79 years of age, iconic folk singer and activist Judy Collins continues to be a vital voice. She recently composed and released a new single “Dreamers”.

“Dreamers” tell the story from the perspective of Maria, a mother of a young “dreamer” who will be adversely affected if DACA is rescinded. The song contains the poignant refrain “This land was made by dreamers / And children of those dreamers / We came here for democracy and hope / Now all we have is hope.”

The protagonist Maria also makes the point “My husband is a good man / He is no raping criminal.” That resonates in light of the current false narrative that tries to paint most immigrants as criminal and rapists. That false narrative contributes to fear base xenophobia which causes a segment of the population to lose sight of the humanity of immigrants.

Collins with her angelic voice and insightful lyrics makes a plea for love and compassion. She deftly balances a dire situation with hope that the voices crying out will eventually be heard.
