Daily Dose of Protest: What About The Body – Donny McCaslin

American saxophonist Donny McCaslin is best known as being the bandleader on David Bowie’s final album, 2016’s Blackstar. He recently released “What About The Body”, the first single from his upcoming album.

The tune features lyrics and vocals from Ryan Dahle. Dahle is a Canadian musician best known for being a member of alt-rock bands Age of Electric, Limblifter and Mounties.

The song’s lyrics includes the provocative line, “Left-wing, right-wing / What about the body?” McCaslin made the following explanation:  “One interpretation could be the state of America right now. To me, that’s a provocative thought: What about the body, the soul of America?”

That line also resonates in light of partisan politics and a broken two-party system. Both sides have an abundance of establishment candidates who are in the pockets of powerful lobbyists. Moderates on both sides are fighting to keep a corrupt system which lines their pockets but fail the people.
